Annual Lifesaver Campaign will be this Friday and Saturday

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

APRIL IS NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

Hundreds of Local Volunteers Work to Keep Kids Safe in Elkhart County

Each year in April, thousands of Lifesavers candies show up at shopping centers and stores through Elkhart County. Along with them, hundreds of volunteers organize their efforts to raise money for CAPS – Child And Parent Services.

The 28th annual Lifesaver Campaign will be this Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27. During the annual campaign, local residents donate money to support CAPS’ mission, and in return receive Lifesaver candy from one of the volunteers. CAPS is a local nonprofit organization that promotes happy kids and healthy families, by providing services and education to strengthen families and keep kids safe in Elkhart County.

“April is a time to celebrate the important role that the community plays in protecting our children,” said Candy Yoder, CEO of CAPS, when speaking at the Goshen Chamber Women in Business lunch last Wednesday. “Everyone’s participation is critical. Focusing on ways to build and promote the protective factors, in every interaction with children and families, is the best thing our community can do to prevent child abuse and promote healthy child development.”

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, almost 400 volunteers will be stationed at the doors of local stores, shopping centers and other high-traffic public areas in Elkhart, Goshen, Nappanee, Bristol and Middlebury. All volunteers will be identified as CAPS volunteers by wearing a bright red apron.

This is the first year that volunteers will not stand at street intersections collecting from drivers. Goshen and Elkhart, as well as Elkhart County, recently passed ordinances prohibiting organizations from collecting in the streets. According to Rob Eichorst, chair of CAPS’ board of directors, CAPS had already decided to eliminate the street collections this year in order to ensure the safety of the volunteers.

In addition to the business collection sites, there are a number of other activities taking place to support CAPS. This Friday is “Wear Blue for Kids” day, in which everyone is asked to wear blue to display a united show of support for the safety of our children. For the first time, local hair salons are offering blue hair extensions. Participating salons are:

Cutting Loose Salon, 3815 S Main St, Elkhart

In Style Salon, 508 W Lincoln Ave, Goshen

Infused Salon, 129 Orpha Dr, Middlebury

L & M Hair Design, 202 S Main Street, Goshen

Tangles Hair Design, 1844 W Lincoln Ave, Goshen

The Beauty Shop, 1234 Johnson St, Elkhart

US Male Hair and Body Salon, 1718 Bashor Rd, Goshen

Additionally, the following restaurants are offering “give-back” nights and will donate a percentage of all sales to CAPS for a specified evening:

Antonio’s Italian Ristorante, 1105 Goshen Ave, Elkhart: April 24

Corson Local History Library

Corson Local History Library and Special Collections Reading Room to open April 26

Bristol — The Elkhart County Historical Museum will be hosting a public grand opening of the new Corson Local History Library and Special Collections Reading Room on Friday, April 26, 2013 from 10Am to 5PM. The public is invited to visit any time during the day, view the new library and learn about the vast array of research material that will be publicly accessible. “The library will be a multi-purpose space where researchers can access books and files on local history subjects, but it will also be the place where researchers can access the materials housed in the museum archive,” according to museum manager Matthew Schuld. “The archive contains countless documents and images providing insights into the history of Elkhart County, including government records, historic photographs, family histories, personal papers, business records, and much more,” Schuld added. The Library will provide the public with access to the collection of both the Elkhart County Historical Society and the Elkhart County Genealogical Society.

The project was funded through a grant from the Corson Family Foundation, with additional funding coming from the Elkhart County Historical Society, Elkhart County Genealogical Society, and the Elkhart County Parks Department. “It shows what can be done when organizations within the community come together, even in difficult economic times. We are deeply grateful to Corson Family Foundation. This is just one of many vital contributions they’ve made to this community,” added Schuld. Many other contributions to the project were made from local companies, non-profits, and individuals. According to Schuld, “The library is dedicated to providing access to the history of Elkhart County, and we wanted to carry that local focus over even into the construction and furnishing of the room as much as possible.”

Volunteers from the museum and the genealogical society will staff the library and assist visitors with their research. “We could not have accomplished this without the work of so many volunteers; this project truly started decades ago through the dedicated efforts of individuals from both organizations. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to these volunteers and those that work with us today,” said Matthew Schuld.

Archival materials will be available to researchers by appointment, and library patrons will have access to archival finding aids, genealogy indexes, and skilled volunteer researchers. “The collections of ECHS and ECGS are full of items just waiting for the right researcher to tap their potential, and the Corson Local History Library and Special Collections Reading Room will help make this possible,” Schuld noted. Visitors can check the library hours, make an appointment, or view archival finding aids all at www.elkhartcountyhistory.org. The new space will be open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10AM to 4PM. Researchers can also access it based on their schedule by making an appointment. To make an appointment, please call the museum at 574-848-4322. Before visiting, researchers are always encouraged to use the online research request form on the museum’s website (above).

INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

Driving Indiana’s Economic Growth

News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 14, 2013

SR 13 Project in Elkhart County to Improve Traveling Conditions In and Around Middlebury

Asphalt resurfacing and connection of Pumpkinvine Trail are included in work

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) announces construction on and near SR 13 in Middlebury and Elkhart County.

Work on the Pumpkinvine Trail began this week, with a lane restriction on northbound SR 13 in Middlebury, from York Drive, extending approximately 1,000 feet north to the Dairy Queen. New temporary markings direct a traffic shift to the west side of SR 13, allowing traffic flow in both directions during the trail construction. This restriction is expected to continue until approximately May 8, weather permitting.

Beginning Monday, April 15, crews will begin to prepare portions of SR 13 near Middlebury for asphalt resurfacing work. This work will take place in several locations from SR 4 to just north of Yoder Drive in Middlebury. Drivers can expect intermittent single-lane traffic under the direction of flaggers. The preparatory work is expected to be complete by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 17, weather permitting.

In mid-May, asphalt resurfacing is scheduled to begin on SR 13 in Middlebury. Work will initially take place in the downtown area on SR 13, from Middlebury Elementary School (just south of Spring Street) to the bridge located south of York Street. The resurfacing project includes milling the surface and laying asphalt, as well as installing some curb and gutter, ADA curb ramps, sections of sidewalk and traffic signal modernization.

Later this spring, the remainder of the contract on SR 13, extending from SR 4 to just north of Yoder Drive in Middlebury, will be milled and resurfaced. The entire project is scheduled to be complete in mid-September. The contract was awarded to Walsh & Kelly, based on the low bid of $2.6 million.

INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone. For the latest news and information about INDOT, visit www.in.gov/indot. You can find traffic restriction information at www.trafficwise.IN.gov. Contact the Fort Wayne District toll free at 866-227-3555.

April Blood Drives 2013

News Release
Media Contact: Tracy Duncan Fox March 19, 2013
260-466-2830 redcrossblood.org

This April, Be a Part of the Change Happening Around You

As the snow melts and spring rains bring fresh flowers, green grass, and warmer weather, the American Red Cross encourages area residents to be a part of change, too.

Spring is about rejuvenation and research studies show that the increase in temperature is a major mood booster. “The need for blood remains constant, especially as the weather becomes warmer,” said Tracy Duncan Fox, spokesperson for the American Red Cross Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region. “A single blood donation can save more than one life, so as the season changes, allow some change within yourself by getting into the habit of donating blood.”

While spring lasts for a few months, donating blood only takes a fraction of that time; the donation process only takes about one hour. A healthy donor can donate red blood cells every 56 days and platelets can be given every 7 days, but no more than 24 times in one year. According to Fox, each and every day, the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region needs to have at least 500 blood donors to help meet the need of patients in the hospitals we serve.

“Strong donor turnout in April and May can give us good momentum into summer. And with only eight percent of eligible individuals donating blood each year, there’s great potential for solid collections during spring,” commented Fox. Approximately 38% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood. But only eight percent of those eligible – or three percent of the general population – donates blood each year.

Every day, patients acrossa the U.S. need an average of 44,000 units of red blood cells. That’s about 16-million donations transfused to 5 million patients each year.

UPCOMING AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES IN YOUR AREA:

Thursday, April 4, from 2:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Community Church in the entryway, located at 57415 Alpha Drive in Goshen.

Monday, April 8, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. at First Baptist Church in the gym, located at 1011 South Indiana Avenue in Goshen.

Friday, April 12, from noon until 6 p.m. at Clinton Frame Mennonite Church in the Family Life Center, located at 63846 CR 35 in Goshen.

Monday, April 15, from noon until 6 p.m. at First Mennonite Church in the Fellowship Hall, located at 203 E. Lawrence in Middlebury.

Goshen Donor Center, located at 1123 S. Indiana Ave. in Goshen. Monday, Friday & Saturday 7 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Tuesday & Wednesday 11:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. Thursday 1 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

How to Donate Blood
To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Indiana and Ohio), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Please bring your Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when you come to donate.

Museum to host American Girl Doll Day

Bristol-The Elkhart County Historical Museum will host its annual American Girl Doll Day on Saturday April 6th. There will be two sessions that day at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. The cost of the event is $5 per child, and you must preregister by April 4th for the event by calling the Elkhart County Parks administration office at 574-535-6458.

This year’s event will feature the American Girl Doll Caroline Abbott, a girl from Western New York who helps her mother run her family’s shipyard after the father is captured during the War of 1812. Program attendees will do fun crafts and activities that center on Caroline’s story and the War of 1812. “This event lets the museum build on the interest children already have in history through these dolls,” said museum curator of education Patrick McGuire.

Also at the event American Girl Doll related prizes will be awarded which include the Caroline Abbott doll and book. Girls are encouraged to bring their dolls but it is not required. Everyone is welcome to attend the program whether or not they have a doll.

Pumpkinvine Trail Partially Closed through May

March 20, 2013
Pumpkinvine Trail

Construction will close Pumpkinvine between State Road 13 and CR 43. This section of the trail will be closed March 25

Construction on a new section of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail between York Dr. and the end of the current trail east of the Dairy Queen in Middlebury will require the trail to be closed from State Road 13 to County Road 43 beginning March 25. Construction is scheduled to be finished by the end of May 2013.

“The closing is necessary because trail construction is happening at the same time State Road 13 will be resurfaced from the Dairy Queen to State Road 4, making it impossible to have trail traffic exit onto State Road 13 at the Dairy Queen,” according to Scott Van Ommeran, superintendent of Elkhart County Parks.

The decision to close the trail was made by the three organizations responsible for the construction: Elkhart County Parks (the managing agency), Indiana Department of Transportation (the funding agency) and Walsh and Kelly (the construction firm).

“We do not want people continuing west past County Road 43 and getting to the end of the trail with nowhere to go,” Van Ommeran said. “The liability of allowing people to blaze their own trail through the construction zone or across private property is too high. After discussion of alternatives to closing the trail, Elkhart County Parks, INDOT and Walsh and Kelly agreed that they could not provide temporary access across private property in order to keep the trail open during construction.”

Trail users are advised to be patient with the inconvenience because the end result will be a great addition to the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail. The suggested routes for trail users coming from the east is to turn north on CR 43 and use CR 14 to reach State Road 13.
