We are ready to begin the 2013-14 school year and are excited to see our students. We know they have played, rested and relaxed over the summer and are ready to jump right in to learning!

We have been preparing for the beginning of school over the summer by cleaning, painting, shining, polishing, and repairing parts of some of the buildings. Northridge Middle School will have new chillers to help control the learning environment for students and staff. The kitchen and cafeteria will also have some changes in new equipment and lines for service. The Northridge Middle School Pool will be out of service for a while for refurbishment, but hopefully will be up and running by the beginning of the second semester. Thanks to our custodians and maintenance personnel, our facilities are in good shape and will be ready to go when school begins.

Our teachers and administrators have also been planning for what lies ahead with learning in the classrooms. We will continue teaching the Common Core State Standards in all of our classrooms from kindergarten through grade twelve. The successes of our One-to-One initiative at Northridge High School will continue to bring the tools for 21st Century skills to our students. The academic successes of York Elementary and Northridge High School being named 4-Star schools gave us reason to celebrate this past year. We can also be very proud of all of the work all of our staff and students do every day to become lifelong learners.

In addition to our academic successes, we have many extra-curricular activities that have brought success to our school community. We have become competitive and won awards at the state level in our band and choir programs at the high school and middle school. Our Science Olympiad teams and Math Counts continue to be high in the award winning categories at state competitions. We won the NLC All Sports trophy for Girls sports and came in second with the boys sports for this year. Our students continue to amaze our community with their strengths in academics and athletics.

With all of the changes happening in our world, it is comforting to know that our local community supports all of our schools. We would like to thank all of our parents and community members for providing such a nurturing and safe environment in which our children are able to flourish. We know that our successes depend on the strengths our community builds within our families, staffs, and students.

Thanks to all of you, we look forward to another great year in Middlebury Community Schools!

-Jane Allen, Superintendent
